Therapeutic Approach

As an occupational therapist, Angela addresses occupations, or everyday activities, and works in collaboration with each client to find practical solutions to promote health and wellness. She enjoys the diversity of services that occupational therapy can offer and uses a holistic perspective to account for all of life’s factors. Treatment supports the mind-body connection, addressing both physical and mental attributes of each client. Treatment may consist of education and training as well as implementation of key skills, strategies, or modifications into habits and routines that support positive outcomes.

As an experienced therapist in child and adolescent development, Angela is committed to helping clients reach their highest potential using a comprehensive and tailored approach. She works collaboratively with clients, engaging family systems when necessary, while empowering each individual through the development of skills needed for successful navigation of life's challenges. She provides mental health focused services to people of all ages from diverse backgrounds. Angela uses therapeutic use of self throughout therapy to create a warm and genuine atmosphere that clients feel comfortable in. She values the collaboration with her clients and employs a client-centered approach to invoke change. This relationship lends itself well to strength-based strategies to promote well-being and self-advocacy. Coaching and consultative models are often employed to promote carry-over of skills and goal attainment. The focus of occupational engagement with health promotion sets occupational therapy practitioners apart from other mental health professionals. Using a client-centered approach, she provides interventions to support the learning and implementation of key skills and strategies, addressing cognition, self-regulation, stress management, and sensory exploration.

She is passionate about providing an encouraging and supportive therapeutic environment, fostering trust between herself and clients, while establishing mutually agreed upon goals. Through her wide ranging experiences in working with children and adolescents, she has developed an approach that empowers them to constructively manage their feelings by controlling impulsive behaviors; setting achievable objectives; encouraging self-efficacy through acknowledgement of effort and achievements; developing communication of emotions through familiar vocabulary; creating stability within daily routines and teaching calming techniques when needed. This comprehensive approach allows individuals to reach their goals by taking ownership of problem solving techniques leading to increased emotional wellbeing. Change can be overwhelming, but we offer the tools to help you on your journey of wellness!

Occupational therapy for child development

Developing handwriting skills in children is an important part of their academic success. Through occupational therapy, children can learn not only how to write neatly, but also the techniques and strategies needed to be successful in their school assignments. The OT works with the child to identify any underlying concerns that may impede progress such as sensory impairment or lack of motor skills. With guidance and practice, a child's handwriting skills can improve rapidly and become a meaningful tool in their learning process.

Executive functioning concerns can be a frustrating experience for children, as it can affect their ability to foster successful relationships in school, home and other settings. Executive functioning involves the ability to plan, organize, remember instructions, pay attention, regulate emotions and control impulses. Children who struggle with executive functioning may have difficulty completing tasks in a timely manner, may be easily distracted or forgetful and may make impulsive decisions without considering potential consequences. OT’s can provide valuable support for children struggling with executive functioning concerns. An OT can help a child develop the skills needed by utilizing tools to address difficulties, so they are able to achieve greater success in all aspects of life.

ALERT Program to address Executive Functioning concerns. The ALERT Program is an evidence-based curriculum developed by psychologists to help students learn the skills necessary for good executive functioning. This program teaches children time management and organization, planning, attention control, and self-regulation skills in a fun and engaging way. By combining cognitive strategies, physical activities and parental involvement, ALERT helps to promote the development of important skills that aid with daily functioning. Occupational therapists use this program to help children understand their difficulties with executive functioning and to practice the skills necessary for success. Through active participation with the ALERT Program, children can benefit from the practices taught by the OT and gain the confidence they need to be successful.
